The British tennis star earned the biggest victory of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever victory over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who becomes the latest UK male player in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the biggest win of my tennis journey, my first win over the top player and probably the most in-form player in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which was the top run of performances in the Spanish star's developing career.

Contest Breakdown

Alcaraz seemed to be progressing easily towards victory at the start as he eased through the first set. Nevertheless, Norrie slowly fought his way into the match by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling points. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability steadily made an impact.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to find his timing on his baseline shots. The rising talent seemed notably struggling hitting his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie presented his opponent very few errors, keeping up his reliability, physicality and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself inside the baseline and attack well.

In the tight closing stages, the British competitor superbly kept his composure to close out the world's finest in the sport.

Career Context

After struggling for a long time due to a major physical setback and challenges with his game, the tennis professional fell as far down as No 91 this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round after that, this win highlights the 30-year-old's improvement as he attempts to return to the world's top twenty and beyond. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his incredible achievements, is has not yet solve how to produce his top form in indoor conditions.
