Arsenal's manager feels assured that his side can continue to cope with injury setbacks after revealing that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been out since the summer due to knee surgery. Originally slated to be available at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when increasing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is far more dependable and has more options,” Arteta said.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This update leaves a dilemma for the midweek match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return from a muscle injury as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains an option following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. As a result, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on squad depth ahead of this season has resulted in a much stronger position to handle such unavailability.

Squad Depth Vital for Premier League Pursuit

When asked if increased squad depth was helping their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, since the current term has seen more issues in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he noted.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they must be capable to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at this level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the setback noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the next level and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his keenness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”

“His availability record is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I look forward to have him back around the team on the pitch because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
