The first preview for the forthcoming real-life version of Moana has arrived. Would you believe that, like many of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears very much like an cartoon and much less like a genuine film with real actors?
Spectacular Visuals That Retain an Animated Feel
The preview for the latest iteration of Moana is certainly spectacular. It features sweeping scenery, beautiful soundtrack, and well-known personalities. However, it also looks like an animated film. The over-the-top visuals depict characters flying, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is achieved through computer-generated imagery and computer animation. Much like earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of CGI is so extensive that it raises the question: what defines these films “real-life” other than the marketing term?
Story and Songs Audiences Know and Love
Whatever the case, this new Moana appears to be a reimagining of the original story, complete with new renditions of the beloved musical numbers. According to an released synopsis, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
New Performers and Familiar Faces
Meanwhile, the teaser features a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is stepping into the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the first films.
A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be portraying Maui. Of course, that character already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Character Shows Up
Arguably the highlight part of the trailer comes in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. How else to introduce the movie’s true mascot?
Arrival in Theaters
The real-life take of Moana arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026.
